Stamford Y Mourns the Loss of Friend, Supporter Herbert Kohn


The Stamford Family YMCA and the Stamford Community lost a longtime unwavering supporter, Herbert Kohn, on September 18, 2020, at the age of 96. His legacy will forever live on; his dedication, commitment, and love of the entire Stamford community will forever live on within all of those who have had the honor and pleasure of knowing him.

Herb served on numerous boards and commissions either as a member or a leader; President of the K.T. Murphy P.T.A., a member of the Urban Renewal Commission, served as a Police Commissioner, was a member of the Zoning Board, the Board of Finance, and President of the Twilight League, a longtime Board member of the Old Timers Athletic Association, President and Chairman of the State Street Debating Society. In 1967, he was the recipient of Stamford’s Citizen of the Year Award, which recognizes Stamford residents for their service to the community. 

Herb was a longtime supporter and friend of the Stamford YMCA. He believed in our mission of being focused on improving the lives of its members and the community. Herb was a regular attendee at our Annual Fine Food for a Cause Gala, we had the great honor to have attended our most recent Gala. He was a friend to many of our board members and guests. Paul Macari, Stamford YMCA Board Chair stated “I have been friends with Herb for many years and, I was saddened to hear of the news, a big loss for our community. “I would say Herb was “everything Stamford”… “.
